International Clitoris Awareness Week

I can’t belie I nearly missed this one. (Well some men have been missing it for years). May 6 – 12th is the first ever International Clitoris Awareness Week, an entire week to celebrate one of my favourite body parts. And don’t you think it’s not just good but great timing that it falls in Masturbation Month? ( And actually also over Mother’s Day – for those husbands who might have forgotten or dipped out in the present department).   But just like with Masturbation Month, CAW also has a more serious side (than reminding men we actually have one). The organisation behind this is Clitoraid, a Las Vegas based group usually devoted to helping victims of female genital mutilation. However, even though this organisation is somewhat serious, for one week they have decided to take a more fun and laid back approach to gain a bit of attention around…

Happy Masturbation Month

Why are the Yanks the only ones to have all the fun? May is National Masturbation Month, which was started on the shores of the USA, but I think it’s about time we adopt it down under as well.   So before I go any further there was one minor oversight that I might have made. Up until 2005, National Masturbation Day was celebrated on the 7th of May and then was apparently moved to the 28th. I had spent most of yesterday gearing up for the one day I thought could be labelled as a Sexologist’s Christmas, only to realise it was not the correct date. Oh well, its still Masturbation Month and why wait to celebrate? Lets celebrate all the way till May the 28th!    Masturbation Month began in 1995 in San Francisco as a response to the forced resignation of the then U.S Surgeon General Jocelyn…

Are We All Sex Addicts?

Sex addiction is a topic that I am weary about. We famous cases such as Tiger Woods using sex addiction as a way to explain his wondering eye but does this only teach us that we don’t have to be responsible for this type of behaviour and can pathologies it?   The term sex addiction is a controversial one with some experts maintaining that we need a new term for this type of behaviour but coming across recent data by Dr Dennis Thompson Jr. you might see why it is so difficult to define and why many of us might be able to adopt the term in our own lives.     Dr Thompson reports some of the following as warning signs to sex addiction;           Using sex to numb negative feelings or achieve a fleeting high (Who hasn’t used sex to numb negatives feelings? I’m not suggesting it’s…

Should We Be Finding A Husband At University?

As a modern Sexologist you might expect me to be up in arms about the recent letter Susan Patton has written to the Editor in the Daily Princetonian, pushing girls to find a husband while at University. But this is where many of you might have me wrong. In a strange way I agree with some (not all) of what she says. As a Sexologist, I have been taught to look at everything and everyone with an open mind before I make up my own conclusions, and this is exactly what I have done with this Jewish Mother’s advice.   However, the below paragraphed did anger me,   “Forget about having it all, or not having it all, leaning in or leaning out … Here’s what nobody is telling you: Find a husband on campus before you graduate. Yes, I went there.”   After only giving an interview today about…
